Why headlights haze up

Every clouded headlight starts the same way. Here is what is actually going on behind that yellow film, and what can and cannot be fixed.

Your lenses are plastic, not glass

Headlight lenses stopped being glass decades ago. Today they are polycarbonate. It is light, it survives rock hits that would shatter glass, and it can be molded into the shapes modern cars use.

Polycarbonate has one weakness. Sunlight breaks it down. So from the factory every lens gets a thin, hard UV coat sprayed on the outside. That coat is the only thing protecting the plastic.

The factory coat wears out

That coat is a wear item, like brake pads. Years of sun, heat, rain, road grit, and car wash chemicals slowly eat through it. It does not fail all at once. It thins, then it starts to break up.

Once it is gone, UV light hits raw polycarbonate for the first time. The surface oxidizes. It goes yellow, then cloudy, then chalky enough to leave residue on your finger.

Haze scatters your light

A clear lens sends light forward in a controlled beam. An oxidized lens is covered in microscopic pits and crazing, so light hits those and scatters in every direction instead of going down the road.

You lose distance ahead of you, and some of that scattered light comes back as glare. It is worst in exactly the conditions where you need the light most, which is rain and full dark.

Coastal Virginia is hard on headlights. Sun, salt air, and humidity all work on that factory coat at the same time.

The five things we see

Not all cloudy headlights are the same problem. Four of these we fix. One of them we do not, and we will tell you so at the car.

Yellowing
The most common one. The factory coat is gone and the plastic underneath has oxidized. It usually starts along the top edge of the lens, because that is the part pointed at the sun. This sands off and seals up well.
Cloudiness and haze
The lens looks foggy rather than yellow. The surface has gone rough at a microscopic level, so light scatters instead of passing through. Same fix. We take the damaged layer off and lay a new coat on.
Peeling or flaking clear coat
You can see patches where the old coat has lifted, often with hard edges that look like a map. This one needs more sanding than a normal job, because every bit of the old coat has to come off or the new coat will lift with it. It costs more for that reason.
Pitting and sandblasting
Small chips across the face of the lens from highway sand and grit. Light pitting sands out. Deep pitting will improve a lot but may not go one hundred percent clear, and we will tell you which one you have before we start.
Moisture inside the housing
Water or fog sitting on the inside of the glass. This is not a lens problem, so restoration will not fix it. It means the housing seal or a vent has failed. Sanding the outside will do nothing for it. If that is what you have, we will say so and we will not charge you.

Why a kit does not hold

A store kit polishes the surface. It looks good for a few weeks because polishing hides the haze, but nothing has been put back on to replace the coat that failed. The raw plastic is still exposed, so it yellows again quickly.

We sand the damaged layer off in stages, then seal the lens with a UV cured acrylic that does the same job as the factory coat. That is the part that makes it last, and it is why we can put a two-year warranty on it.
